In this bookbinding workshop you'll learn traditional and contemporary techniques using specialized tools and quality materials. Learn how to make 4 types of books and a box: accordion, stab-stitch, canoe stitch with a single leaf, hardcover with several leaves and a portfolio box. This workshop will give you an understanding of the fundamental structures of bookbinding. With these techniques you will be able to present work, make notebooks, prepare gifts or create artist's books.

The aim is for everyone to leave the workshop with their own books and the technical knowledge to continue bookbinding without assistance. At Fica, where we have a range of bookbinding tools and equipment, you can continue to explore the world of bookbinding.

Program and Methodology

These sessions will be totally practical. We will develop specific projects throughout the workshop that will give you the knowledge to become autonomous in the process. Afterwards, you can always come to Fica to train in Craft Gym mode.

Lesson 1 - Stab stitch and accordion

Class 2 and 3 - Ccanoe stitch with single folio (fabric) and Hardcover with several folios (1/4 fabric)

Lesson 4 - Notebook box

What you will learn to do:

Techniques: accordion, Japanese sewing, canoe sewing with a single folio, hard cover with several folios and a box for the notebooks

You don't need any previous knowledge of the subject, nor do you need to bring any materials.

 

The workshop will be held in English and Portuguese.

In this series of bookbinding workshops you will learn traditional and contemporary techniques, using specialist tools and quality materials. Learn to make 4 versatile book structures and a box: a concertina, stab stitch, single-section pamphlet, multi-section binding and finally a portfolio box. The workshop covers the basics of bookbinding styles all of which are ideal for presenting work, sketchbooks, gifts, or as the basis for artist books.

Everyone will leave the course with their own collection of books and the skills to make more at home using minimal equipment.
