If you're like us and are amazed whenever you see a book with visible spine seams, then this workshop is for you. You'll learn how to make two variations of exposed stitching for books with several folios (you'll also learn what a folio is), exploring French (crossed) and Coptic stitching, both with 180º page openings. As the name suggests, these bindings have visible spines that show the stitching that is normally hidden by the cover. You'll use various techniques, tools and materials to create two unique bindings.

The aim is for everyone to leave the workshop with their own books and the technical knowledge to continue bookbinding without assistance. At Fica, where we have a range of bookbinding tools and equipment, you can continue to explore the world of bookbinding.

What you will learn to do:

Techniques: French (cross) and Coptic stitching

Individual project: Two bindings with the indicated seams

You don't need any previous knowledge of the subject, nor do you need to bring any materials.

During this workshop you with learn how to create two variations of multi-section bindings with exposed sewing: the coptic stitch and the (French) link stitch. As indicated by the name, these bindings have exposed spines that show off the stitching work usually hidden by the cover. You will use a range of techniques, tools and materials to create two unique bindings. This flexible binding structure lies apartment and has limitless design possibilities.

Everyone will leave the course with a collection of books and the skills to make more.
