In this bookbinding workshop you'll learn traditional and contemporary techniques using specialized tools and quality materials. Learn how to make various types of books: pamphlets, visible Coptic stitching, Japanese styles, canoe stitching with a single folio and a more traditional-style book with a hard cover. This workshop will give you an understanding of the fundamental structures of bookbinding. With these techniques you will be able to present work, make notebooks, prepare gifts or create artist's books.
The aim is for everyone to leave the workshop with their own books and the technical knowledge to continue bookbinding without assistance. At Fica, where we have a range of bookbinding tools and equipment, you can continue to explore the world of bookbinding.
Program and Methodology
These sessions will be totally practical. We will develop specific projects throughout the workshop that will give you the knowledge to become autonomous in the process. Afterwards, you can always come to Fica to train in Craft Gym mode.
Class 1 - Canoe stitching, one-sheet books, dos-a-dos binding
Lesson 2 - Japanese-style binding: Yotsume Toji (4-hole binding) and Kikko Toji (Turtle shell)
Class 3 - Binding with visible stitching: Coptic stitching with several folios
Class 4 - Traditional: Single folio with 1/2 cloth hard cover
The workshop will be held in English and Portuguese.
You don't need any previous knowledge of the subject, nor do you need to bring any materials.

In this series of bookbinding workshops you will learn traditional and contemporary techniques, using specialist tools and quality materials. Learn to make pamphlets, stab stich, coptic binding and traditional 1/2 binding. The workshop covers the basics of bookbinding styles all of which are ideal for presenting work, sketchbooks, gifts, or as the basis for artist books.
Everyone will leave the course with their own collection of books and the skills to make more at home using minimal equipment.
Week 1: Pamphlets: single section, one sheet wonders, dosey doe
Week 2: Stab stitch: 4 hole, tortoise shell
Week 3: Coptic binding
Week 4: Traditional 1/2 binding - single section
