Description

In this paper pulp painting workshop, participants will experience the artisanal process of recycling paper, from preparing the pulp to creating new sheets. Using scraps of colored paper—materials we normally discard—we produce a pulp that serves both as the medium and the canvas for the painting.

We will explore the various properties of this raw material, focusing on its transformation to create unique sheets through direct painting with colored paper pulp, in which the paper fiber itself becomes the image.

No previous knowledge necessary.

Practical Exercise

Using scrap paper from various sources and colors, in the paper pulp painting workshop, you’ll learn how to prepare it for recycling and making handmade paper. We’ll use handmade or readily available machines and tools so that you can continue to apply the methods you learn in your own projects at home.

Using scraps of paper in different colors, we will explore ways to transform color, with a focus on painting directly with colored paper pulp, where the fiber itself becomes the image.

Program content

Introduction to paper manufacturing, its raw materials, and manufacturing processes;
Paper manufacturing using recycled paper waste;
Transformation and alteration of the paper's shape, color, and texture;
Drying and storage process.

Material

The materials needed for the paper pulp painting workshop are included:
• Paper for recycling
• Frames and Nets
• Buckets, a grinder, and rags
• Each participant will take home the sheets they created during the workshop

About the trainer

Rita Faia was born in 1987 in Lisbon. She has a postgraduate degree in Artistic Illustration from Estal/UAL and a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon.During a Nature Drawing Course she discovered field trips and a love of drawing plants and since then botany has been the main focus of her work. She works with drawing, gouache painting, alternative photographic processes and handmade papermaking.

Cancellation of Registration

IMPORTANT - Cancellation/postponement/refund of registrations (including gift voucher registrations) is only allowed if you give us at least 7 days' notice before the start of the workshop. If you cancel less than 7 days before the start of the workshop, we will do our best to fill your place, however, you can only postpone the workshop (or put the amount in a gift voucher) if your place is filled.

If a trainee fails to attend one or more training sessions, FICA is not responsible for replacing or compensating for that session.

The workshop is held in Portuguese. If you don't speak Portuguese, we will try to translate in English. But understand that Portuguese will be the main language.
