Ceramics workshops
At FICA Oficina Criativa, ceramics has had a special place for 10 years. In our ceramics workshops in Lisbon, you'll get your hands on the clay, learn hand-forming techniques, explore the potter's wheel and discover different ways of decorating your pieces.
The ceramics workshops take place on a regular basis, lasting between 2:30 and 11 hours, and can take place in one or more sessions. Depending on the theme, some take place every month. All materials are included and no previous knowledge or experience is required (except where indicated).
There are sessions focused solely on construction, others dedicated to decoration, and even workshops that combine both. Each workshop is an opportunity to get hands-on and learn in a practical and creative way.

How to choose a Ceramics Workshop
In the ceramics workshops we explore different stages of working with clay. Some focus on the construction of the pieces, either using hand-forming techniques or the potter's wheel. There are workshops that combine the two approaches, allowing us to explore form and color, but also workshops dedicated to specific decoration techniques.
Below, we've divided our workshops by type to make it easier for you to choose the ceramics workshop that best suits what you're looking for.
All the workshops can be taken independently, without the need to follow a specific order or to have taken part in others before.

FLASH CERAMICS WORKSHOP

The Flash Ceramics Workshop is one of our main ceramics workshops. It's an introductory workshop, ideal as a first contact with ceramics and with no previous experience necessary. You'll learn about the principles of ceramics (how clay is transformed into ceramics, types of pastes, firing) and learn two hand-forming techniques, building at least two pieces of your own.
What techniques will you learn?
You'll learn two of the main hand-forming techniques: slab and pinch pot.
What is the aim of the workshop?
You'll learn the principles of forming, the process of transforming clay into ceramics, including the different ceramic pastes and firing times. But also the tools, materials and techniques used and how each approach influences the final result.
After a brief introduction to the world of ceramics, you'll put this knowledge into practice by creating two pieces of your own.
The shape of the pieces is directly linked to the type of techniques learned - a mug (ballast) and a freer piece (ball).
This workshop does not include painting the pieces.
Do you take the pieces at the end?
The two pieces you make will be yours. However, after the workshop, they will still need to be dried, fired (twice) and glazed. This process will be carried out by us and you can collect the pieces after notification (on average 3 to 4 weeks after the workshop).

Frequently asked questions and conditions of participation in the ceramics workshops
Frequently asked questions about FICA Oficina Criativa's ceramics workshops, including materials included, experience required or the most suitable workshop.
Are the materials included in the ceramics workshops? What about firing?
Yes, the workshop fee includes all the necessary materials. It also includes the process we carry out after the workshop, such as firing and glazing the pieces.
Do I need experience to do a ceramics workshop?
No. At FICA you can take workshops without any experience. The ceramics workshops are designed for beginners and require no previous knowledge. Exceptionally, there may be workshops that require some experience, but this information will always be indicated in the description of the workshop itself.
Which workshop is right for me?
It depends above all on your level of experience and the type of process you want to explore. If you're just starting out, introductory or flash workshops are ideal for a first contact with ceramics. If you're looking for a more complete experience, with time to follow various stages of the process, workshops with several sessions allow you to delve deeper into techniques and work in more detail.
You can also choose depending on the technique: hand-forming is freer and more accessible, while the potter's wheel requires more practice and control and is more challenging initially. If you're more interested in surface and design, decoration workshops are a good option.
Basically, there is no right or wrong choice - there are just different ways of entering into and continuing the relationship with ceramics.
At the end, can I take the pieces I've created?
Each workshop has different objectives, so the number and type of pieces may vary. In most cases, the pieces you create will be yours, but not all of them will be ready immediately. They first go through drying, firing and glazing, or just firing where applicable. Some workshops indicate the specific number of pieces that will be finished. As soon as they are ready, you will receive an email with instructions for collection. It usually takes 3 to 4 weeks for forming or potter's wheel workshops, and 1 to 2 weeks for decoration workshops (except sgraffito).
For questions about registration, payments or cancellations, please consult the conditions on each workshop page and at terms and conditions
